As I write this, the current conditions in Lubbock are: Cold, dark, and light snow is falling. It’s about 17 degrees outside with a wind chill of somewhere below 17 degrees. Yes it’s cold outside and it’s only going to get colder.
It’s also supposed to snow more overnight and travel on Thursday morning could be dangerous. Already we are seeing delays and cancellations for Thursday in Lubbock and the surrounding areas which you can follow here.
If you do need to drive around Wednesday night or Thursday morning, just remember that some roads in Lubbock are more dangerous than others. Or at least, during winter weather events, some roads see the most car accidents. If you have lived in Lubbock longer than year, you probably know these roads and areas to stay away from.
If you aren’t sure which roads and areas are bad when it snows or gets icy, the City of Lubbock tweeted out a handy map that you can use. According to this map, this is where most accident happen in Lubbock when temperatures drop.
Yes, the map is mainly Loop 289, all along I-27, all along the Marsha Sharp Freeway, and of course the City of Lubbock would like to remind everyone that flyovers throughout the city could be very icy and dangerous.
Lubbock is not expected to get above freezing until Friday afternoon, so take it easy when driving. Also if you are planning on driving anywhere else in Texas, be sure to check road conditions on Thursday as many parts of the state will see snow and ice overnight.
