There is no shortage of activities available from the Avon Parks and Recreation Department to keep kids active as we head into spring/summer. Below is a list of upcoming programs including information regarding registering for the city’s popular Safety Town for incoming kindergarteners.
Registration begins March 1 for Avon’s popular Safety Town program for students entering kindergarten this fall.
Kids Yoga and Craft is a combination of a winter themed yoga class and creativity in making a mindful craft (kindness rocks).The program is from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Feb. 20 at Avon Isle 37080 Detroit Road and is open to children ages six and up. Cost is $25 for residents, and $40 for non-residents.
The winter session of Dance to EvOLvE runs Feb. 21 to April 4 and Avon Isle. Classes offered include Hip Hop (ages 8-12), Star Shiners Tap/Ballet (ages 4 and half to six), and Beat Breakers Hip Hop (ages 4-7). Fees apply to each program and locations/times vary.
Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day at the ShamRock’n Run Shake Up for children grades K-6 from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park. Hosted by the Avon Running Club, children will explore the new green park space, speed play on the hill, and venture to the paths connected to Veterans Memorial Park. Runners will each earn a special edition St. Patrick’s Day shirt, participate in games, run and have fun. Cost is $25.
Tennis anyone? Registration is open for indoor tennis for children ages 4-5. The five-week sessions begin March 15 from 5:45 to 6:15 p.m. at Avon Heritage South gym, 35600 Bentley Drive.
Jumpstart Sports is offering Introductory Volleyball for children in grades 1-6 at Avon Heritage South gym, 35600 Bentley Drive. The program begins in April. Cost is $85.
The Avon Police and Avon Parks and Recreation departments are partnering to offer a Bike Rodeo for children ages 7-11 (no training wheels). A Bike Rodeo is an event for children to learn and practice bike safety. The Bike Rodeo includes a safety inspection and a series of skill stations related to everyday riding situations. Participants will practice starting and stopping, the safe way to exit a driveway, negotiate an intersection, and avoid common road hazards. The rodeo is June 4 at Avon Middle School (two sessions available). Cost is $10 for residents only and there is a maximum of 35 participants per time slot. Registration opens March 1.
Finally, if you have a child entering kindergarten this fall, Safety Town is a wonderful summer program offered by the Avon Parks and Recreation, and the Avon Police and Fire departments (not mandatory program for kindergarteners). The program is located at the Avon Board of Education office, 36600 Detroit Road, with the Safety Town village housed behind the office building. Each day will focus on a different topic such as fire safety, riding the bus and healthy living. Online registration begins at 8 a.m. March 1 and ends May 1 (or until full). Session dates are June 13-17, June 20-24 and June 27-July 1. Times are 8 to 10 a.m., 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or 1 to 3 p.m. for each session. Cost is $25. Families are encouraged to be sure to check calendars for scheduling conflicts, as Safety Town organizers are not always able to accommodate changes after registration. Bike helmets are required for all Safety Town students. The staff will consist of Avon school teachers, Avon police officers and high school/college student volunteers.

Top pizza: Yelp, the popular online review platform, recently released its list of the Top 100 Pizza Spots in the United States and Avon’s own In Forno Pizza, 35840 Chester Road, made the list at No. 46.
According to information posted on Yelp’s website (yelp.com), In Forna Pizza has 197 reviews with an average of five out of five stars. The list was decided based on several factors, including the total number of reviews and the ratings received in those reviews.

Theater production: We’ve all waited a long time for live theater to return. Now is the perfect time to see “Children of Eden” from Mighty Goliath Productions (MGP). Show dates/times are Feb 18, 19, 25, 26 at 7:30 p.m.; and Feb 20 and 26 at 2 p.m. at the Daniel B Ross Performing Arts Center, Avon Lake High School, 175 Avon Belden Road.
Children of Eden is a musical based on the Book of Genesis, with Act I telling the story of Adam and Eve, Cain, and Abel, while Act II tells the story of Noah and the Flood.
MGP is a non-profit musical theater company comprised of adults, teenagers, and children from throughout northeast Ohio. MGP has donated over $280,000 in proceeds to the Avon Lake Public Schools’ Performing Arts Programs since its inception in 1959.

Charity Ball: The Avon/Avon Lake Community Resource Services (CRS) 33rd annual Charity Ball has been rescheduled to now take place April 2 at the Shipyard Event Center in Lorain. For more information and to purchase tickets, go to CRS2022.givesmart.com.
Free throw contest winners: The Avon/Avon Lake Knights of Columbus Council #3269 recently sponsored a Free Throw Championship at St. Joseph Parish for girls and boys ages nine to 14. Directors Rudy Breglia and DeWitt Gober presented Mitchell’s Ice Cream gift certificates and championship medals to Lauren Ausberry,Elly Briggs, Gina Coone, Gabrella Opron, Mariela, Bryce Seabold, Keenan Nelson, Jack Bartel, Blair LeCar, and Brett LaCar. The students have the opportunity to compete in the Knights of Columbus District Contests Feb. 19 at Elyria Catholic High School.
Kindergarten registration: Avon Lake City Schools online kindergarten registration is now open through Feb. 25. The number of students registered will help determine classroom and building placement for the fall of 2022. Incoming students must be five-years-old on or before Aug. 1 to register for the 2022-2023 school year.
Registration is not complete until the district registrar receives all required registration documentation. Parents can upload documents via the registration portal (preferred) or items can be sent to the Office of the Registrar via email, postal service or fax. Hiring veterans: A special free hiring event for veterans, “Hiring Heroes,” will take place at 1 p.m. Feb. 23 at Lorain County Community College, 1002 N Abbe Road. The event is sponsored by the Lorain County Manufacturing Sector Partnership.
